LVP vs SPC Rigid Core Flooring: Which Is Right for Your Home or Business?
Oct 27, 2026·Brian Bowman

If you've started shopping for new floors, you've probably run into two sets of letters over and over: LVP and SPC. Folks come into our warehouse in Gadsden every week asking what the difference is, which one is "better," and whether it's worth paying a little more. The honest answer is that both are great floors. The right one depends on your space, your subfloor, your traffic and your budget. Here's a plain-talk guide to help you pick.
What's the Difference Between LVP and SPC?
LVP stands for luxury vinyl plank. It's a layered vinyl floor with a printed wood-look design on top and a clear wear layer protecting it. It feels a little softer and warmer underfoot, and it's a smart, budget-friendly way to get a wood look.
SPC stands for stone plastic composite, and it's what people mean when they say "rigid core." The core is made with stone (limestone) mixed into the vinyl, which makes the plank stiffer and denser. That rigid core is what helps it lie flat over small dips in a subfloor and stand up to heavy furniture and busy rooms.
Both look like real wood. Both come in plank sizes and colors that fit just about any style. The main differences are how stiff the plank is, how thick it is, and how thick the wear layer is.
Waterproof: Every Bryson Co Floor Is Waterproof
This is the first question we get, so let's settle it: all Bryson Co flooring is waterproof. That goes for our LVP and our SPC rigid core. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms and basements are all fair game.
That matters a lot here in the South. Between humid summers, muddy boots, spilled drinks and the occasional leaking dishwasher, water is the number one enemy of a floor. A waterproof plank means a spill is just a spill. Wipe it up and keep going.
Pet Friendly and Scratch Resistant
If you've got dogs, cats or kids (or all three), the wear layer is where you want to pay attention. The wear layer is the clear top coat, measured in mil. A thicker wear layer gives you more protection against scratches, scuffs and daily wear.
Here's how it looks on floors we have in stock right now:
- Nature Oak, Option 1: 5mm, 20 mil wear layer, 1mm attached pad, $1.50/sq ft
- Nature Oak, Option 2: 5.5mm, 22 mil wear layer, 1.5mm attached pad, $1.75–$1.85/sq ft
- Almond Premium SPC: 5.5mm, 22 mil wear layer, 1.5mm pad, $1.75–$1.85/sq ft
- Almond Elite SPC: 8mm, 30 mil wear layer, 1.5mm pad, $2.50/sq ft
Our 8mm Premium SPC Collection (Staple Maple, Cabana Gold, Almond, Treacy Sugar and Mountain Oak) is built with that heavier 30 mil wear layer, and it's sold as waterproof, scratch resistant and pet friendly. If you've got big dogs running through the house, that's a great place to start.
Click-Lock Installation: DIY Friendly, Contractor Fast
Both LVP and SPC use click-lock installation. The planks snap together at the edges and "float" over the subfloor, with no glue and no nails. That's good news whether you're a weekend DIYer or a contractor trying to finish a job on schedule.
With an attached pad already on the back of the plank, there's one less layer to buy and roll out. The rigid core in SPC makes the joints even more forgiving, because the stiff plank doesn't flex as much while you're locking rows together.
New Construction vs Remodeling
New construction: On a fresh, flat subfloor, both LVP and SPC go down beautifully. Builders like a floor that installs fast, looks good in the listing photos, and holds up to buyers who move in with pets and kids. Our 5mm Nature Oak at $1.50/sq ft is a popular pick for spec homes and rentals because it keeps the budget in line without looking cheap.
Remodeling: Older homes rarely have perfect subfloors. That's where SPC rigid core shines. The stiffer plank bridges small imperfections better, and the thicker 8mm boards feel more solid underfoot. If you're redoing a whole floor in an older house, ask us about the 5.5mm and 8mm rigid core options.
Commercial vs Residential
Residential: For bedrooms, living rooms and most family homes, a 20 or 22 mil wear layer handles everyday life well. You'll get the waterproof protection and the wood look at a price that leaves money for the rest of the project.
Commercial and high traffic: Offices, small shops, salons, rental units and short-term rentals take a beating from rolling chairs, foot traffic and constant cleaning. For those spaces, we usually point people toward the thicker SPC with the 30 mil wear layer. It's built for the extra wear and still looks warm and inviting.
Cost Effective Without Cutting Corners
Hardwood looks great, but it doesn't love water and it isn't cheap. LVP and SPC give you the look of wood, waterproof protection and easy installation for a fraction of the price. Because we're a wholesale flooring warehouse and family owned, we keep more than 1 million sq ft in stock, so most styles are ready to load up the same day. No waiting weeks for a special order and no showroom markup.
Attractive and Functional: Interior Design Tips
A few quick tips we share with customers:
- Light, warm tones like Nature Oak and Almond make smaller rooms feel bigger and brighter, and they pair well with white trim and neutral walls.
- Run the planks the long way in a room or hallway to stretch the space visually.
- Use one floor through the main living areas. Because it's waterproof, you can run the same plank from the kitchen into the living room and down the hall with no transitions breaking it up.
- Finish it right with matching baseboard and quarter round. We stock trim, too.
So, LVP or SPC?
- Choose LVP if you want the best price per square foot, a slightly softer feel, and you have a flat subfloor.
- Choose SPC rigid core if you're remodeling an older home, have big pets or heavy traffic, or need a commercial-grade floor.
